Wood Burning Stove –
A stove designed to only burn wood.
Some wood burning stoves can have Multifuel Kits added to them after installation. Thus smokeless coal can be burnt.
Flue Diameter – Flue collar or spigot sizes vary with each stove. The flue diameter is listed in the “specification” tab of the product on our website. This is important to note when purchasing flue parts.
Chimney Liner / Liner – A flexible stainless steel tube which is slid into your chimney and connects via an adaptor and vitreous pipe onto your stove. Chimney liners are sold by the metre. Liners should extend the full length of your chimney stack and terminate just below the chimney pot.
MF – Shorthand abbreviation for “Multifuel” stoves.
Stoves that burn wood, smokeless fuel or coal. Multifuel stoves feature either a fixed or movable (riddling) grate and ashpan for easy cleaning.
Registry Plate – Also known as a closure plate.
The Registry Plate is a galvanised steel plate used to seal the chimney where the stove flue passes through.
Multifuel Stove –
Stoves that burn wood, smokeless fuel or coal. Multifuel stoves feature either a fixed or movable (riddling) grate and ashpan for easy cleaning.
Cowl – Attaches onto the top of your chimney pot to prevent rain and/or birds entering the chimney. A pot hanger cowl is a popular option for those who plan to line the chimney.
Adaptor to Flex – An adaptor that connects the black vitreous stove pipe to a stainless steel flexible chimney liner. Available as a screw-fix or push-fit type.
Data Plate – The data plate is a small metal plate with printed information. This relates to the stove and/or chimney flue type installed.
Fire Cement – A compound to seal flue joints.
Fire cement has a putty like consistency. Apply as a bead around the stove collar.
Roof Flashing – Used externally to seal twin wall or balanced flue pipes when passing through the roof of a building.
Different flashings are suitable for different roof pitches and types. If in doubt, seek guidance from your installer.
Vitreous Stove Pipe –
A length of single thickness durable steel with highly heat resistant vitreous coating. Vitreous flue pipe is the visible first length of pipe attached to the stove flue collar. Vitreous flue pipe is not suitable for external use. Additionally, it cannot be used near combustible materials.
316 Grade Chimney Liner – A grade of stainless steel chimney liner suitable for wood burning and gas stoves. Inferior liner grade to 904 but is lower in price.
904 Grade Chimney Liner – A grade of stainless steel chimney liner suitable for burning wood, smokeless fuels, gas and oil. A superior liner grade than 316 but higher in price.
KW – Stands for Kilowatts per hour. This is a measurement of heat emitted from the stove. The most popular KW heat output range is 5kW. Generally, this can often avoid the need for any additional ventilation to be installed within a room.
Log Store – A storage section underneath certain stove models. Can be purchased as an optional extra with some stove models, or already incorporated into the stove design.
Hearth – The non-combustible area underneath the stove. Usually made from stone or, with certain freestanding stove models, 12mm thick toughened glass.
Twin Wall – A double skinned stainless steel flue system that can be used to install a stove in virtually any location. Twin wall clips together easily without the need for additional adhesives or sealants.
Eco Design / Eco Ready / Eco –
From January 1st 2022, all stoves sold in the UK must meet the new Government Clean Air strategy requirements. This was published for minimum seasonal efficiency and maximum emission requirements for solid fuel burning. Eco Design stoves have been tested to emit very low levels of pollution and particulate matter.
Balanced Flue – Balanced flues are used with gas stoves and fires and consist of two pipes, with one resting inside the other. The inner pipe serves the purpose of removing any waste gases outside your property. The outer pipe draws in vital air from outside that is required for the combustion process.
Conventional Flue – Conventional flues use natural circulation of heated air to take gases and combustibles away from the fire in a fireplace, boiler or stove. Rather than being drawn from the outside like balanced flues, the air is drawn from around the appliance. If installing a stove into a chimney stack this is a conventional flue system.
LPG – Stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. If you have bottled gas or a large gas tank your property, be sure to purchase an LPG model if you wish to use this. The term LPG will always be clearly stated in the product description.
Natural Gas – Natural gas is gas piped into your property from a gas supply company. This is how the majority of properties in the UK are supplied. Be sure to purchase a natural gas appliance in this case.
DEFRA – DEFRA stands for Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs. DEFRA approved stoves are designed for use within smoke controlled areas. Often referred to as an SE stove models, Known as SE models, these stoves have a restriction on their air control(s). Consequently to prevent the fire being slumbered thus causing heavy smoking and emissions.
SIA – SIA stands for Stove Industry Alliance. A group of manufacturers who work together to promote the cleanest stoves available. Key manufacturer members include ACR, ARADA, Ekol, Mi Flues, Saltfire, Charlton & Jenrick and Stovax stoves.

Inset Stoves – An inset stove is a wood burning or multifuel stove that is designed to be slid into a fireplace chamber without any space around the unit. Inset stoves are particularly useful when installing into small fireplace openings, or into existing stone fireplaces.
Media Wall Fires – A media wall fire is an electric or gas fire which is incorporated into a purpose built unit. Followed by inclusion of your television. Media wall fires are usually landscape in design and modern in style.
Cleanburn – Cleanburn is a system by which hot air is introduced into the firebox just above the normal height of the fire.
This allows the combustion of unburned hydrocarbons in the smoke stream. Consequently, you receive a ‘cleaner burn’ (i.e. less soot particles up the chimney/flue and into the atmosphere) but also can enjoy further flames.
