Portway multi fuel and wood burning stoves were invented by an ironmongery business owner in the early 1800s.

Charles Portway’s invention was so successful that a nearby shop keeper built a stove to use it.

Soon after, Portway established a small foundry that produced solid fuel stoves that were so successful that they survived practically unchanged until the 1980s.

The beauty of Portway’s stoves was their efficiency. The stoves burned so slowly that they drew the maximum amount of heat from the fuel. Tortoise stoves were proudly made with the phrase “Slow but Sure” emblazoned on the front.

It was the first heating device to provide fuel efficiency as a significant selling factor, making its role in the history of their business extremely important today.
