The full range of Portway Stoves can be found here.

Portway multifuel and wood burning stoves were invented in the early 1800s by the proprietor of an ironmongery business who was inspired by the very first enclosed metal stoves that debuted in North America at the end of the 1700s and custom constructed his own burner to heat his Halstead-based store.

Charles Portway’s invention was so effective that a nearby shopkeeper asked Portway to build a stove to heat his store as well. Soon after, Portway established a small foundry that produced solid fuel stoves that were so successful that they survived practically unchanged until the 1980s.

The beauty of Portway’s stoves was their efficiency. The stoves burned so slowly that they drew the maximum amount of heat from the fuel. Tortoise stoves were proudly made with the phrase “Slow but Sure” emblazoned on the front. It was the first heating device to provide fuel efficiency as a significant selling factor, making its role in the history of their business extremely important today.
